Signs & Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

The symptoms of ED can be difficult to ignore for most, but in some cases these signs are not recognized as a serious sexual dysfunction. As a result, ED that goes untreated can have a negative impact on the mental health and sexual relationships of many men. It’s important to be knowledgeable about the symptoms of erectile dysfunction so that you can know when it’s time for you to seek treatment.

#1 Trouble Getting or Keeping an Erection

The first major symptom men will notice when dealing with erectile dysfunction, is their inability to get or maintain an erection. While this may seem like an obvious symptom, it’s important to note that failure to sustain an erection every now and then is completely normal. There’s no reason to be concerned if it’s happened once or twice. However, if it occurs frequently and develops into a serious problem for you and your partner, you may require medication to correct it.

#2 Lack of Interest in Sex

Impotence, or ED, can often lead to a lack of sexual desire. If you notice a decline in your sexual interest, in combination with an inability to get an erection when you do want sex, you are likely experiencing erectile dysfunction.

#3 Anxiety

Many men experiencing ED also claim to develop feelings of anxiety when it comes to sex. Simply discussing the topic of sex, or even just the idea of sex can take a toll on their emotional health. When it comes to ED related anxiety, these feelings can be alleviated by simply correcting the ED. By restoring their sense of control in the bedroom, the anxiety they once felt about sex is replaced with excitement.

#4 Relationship Issues

For many people, physical intimacy is an important part of maintaining a healthy relationship. Not only is it important to satisfy your partner sexually, but physical intimacy can also lead to a stronger emotional connection. For some men, their ED can become a source of tension in their romantic and sexual relationships. Fortunately, Ed is treatable, so your relationship doesn’t have to suffer.

#5 Painful or Curved Erection

Keep in mind that erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to get or keep an erection. If you’re experiencing painful or curved erections, this could be a sign that you have a more serious sexual dysfunction known as Peyronie’s disease. Peyronie’s disease is when fibrous scar tissue develops inside the penis and results in curved, painful erections. However, Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction are not mutually exclusive. Some men with Peyronie’s disease will also develop erectile dysfunction. This risk is increased for men over the age of 50. If you’re experiencing painful or curved erections, contact your doctor to discuss your treatment options.
